By The Numbers
Let’s add up all the ways forests help our planet to see why we must protect them for future generations.
Unilever is proud to collaborate with World Wildlife Fund in this special climate change content series highlighting the importance of trees and forests. Learn more about how you can take climate action and help protect a million trees by clicking here.
We count on forests for all types of services: helping slow climate change by filtering carbon dioxide, preventing landslides and floods, and providing clean air, water, medicine, crops and shade.
The impact that forests have on everyone’s life day in and day out is undeniable, but sometimes it takes numbers to help show the real story. No matter where you live, these numbers hit home.
31% of the world’s land surface is covered by forests. Imagine the massive impact it would have on our ecosystem, environment and wildlife if that number was reduced to, say, 25% due to deforestation?
7% of total forest cover is planted by humans, which can provide about two-thirds of global wood production!
How Trees Help:
More than 210 gigatons (one gigaton is a billion tons) of carbon are stored in tropical forests alone - more than seven times of what humans produce annually . As deforestation continues, more carbon gets released into the atmosphere, increasing greenhouse gases that can contribute to extreme weather shifts and climate change.
Through livelihoods including forest management and conservation.
80% of the world’s plant and animal species living on land can be found in forests.
Forests provide homes for millions of animals, with even more being discovered!
The top 3 countries for annual total deforestation were Brazil, Australia and Indonesia from 2000-2010.
232 million hectares (1 hectare = 2.47 acres) of forests could be lost by 2050 if we do not take action, versus only 55.5 million if we take action now to preserve forests.
15% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation. This type of gas is a key factor in climate change, which can lead to more extreme weather across the world.
