More than 15,000 students from Chicago and the surrounding areas came together for We Day Illinois, and we are humbled to be able to help support and fuel their passion.
For eight years, We Day has been bringing together and empowering the ‘WE’ generation. These are the young people who are harnessing their collaborative motivation and the intrinsic power of good to create a better world for us all.
We support Free The Children’s We Day because of the core belief system that we have in common: the young people of today will shape the world of tomorrow, and it is our responsibility to guide them to success.
Our own Rob Candelino, VP of Marketing, Hair Care, spoke during the broadcast, celebrating all of the students there: “I encourage all of you, with your immense talent…find your passions and I promise you, people will follow.”
Aashin Amin is from Aurora, Illinois and also a Unilever Bright Future Award recipient. During the event, he discussed his passion for providing people with clean water, keeping our planet healthy and the importance of helping those in need. At Metea Valley High School, he has been raising money to provide water pumps in developing countries.
Speaking to his passions, the rising high-school senior said, “I appreciate what I have and want other to have the basic necessities of life…change starts small, but I am hoping to grow this project so that people in poverty can be empowered to be agents of change.”
Empowering Sustainable Growth
Gabrielle DeMarco—another Unilever Bright Future Award recipient—spoke of her school environmental club and the importance of being socially conscious — an area of top-priority for Unilever. “We’ve saved almost 16,000 water bottles from going into the environment… and I believe it’s our duty to preserve it and protect it for future generations.”
Small steps, such as simply being more conscious about recycling, can make a big difference—not only for the planet, but everyone who inhabits it. We’ve made some good progress in reducing our environmental impact and, as mapped out in the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan, intend to halve our footprint by 2020. But we cannot do it alone, which is why we are proud to continue to support our young leaders—the ‘WE’ generation.
