Our 10 Brightest Moments
It’s been a great year of working together to make big differences in the world.
2015 has had quite a few highlights, from marriage equality to increased climate action. As one of the world’s largest companies, Unilever not only reaches 2 billion people a day with our family of brands like Dove® and Knorr®, but we strive to make sustainable living commonplace to create a brighter future.
With your help and participation, we were able to experience some memorable and impactful moments this year:
Our 10 Brightest Moments
Sharing a Million Meals with Feeding America
Child hunger is often considered a distant problem, but 1 out of 5 children here in the U.S. does not know where their next meal is coming from. So we teamed up with Feeding America and called on Americans to get involved, to achieve one goal: share a million meals. This year, we provided more than a million meals to those in need, and with your help we were able to demonstrate the true power of social media to do good.
Keep America Beautiful Through Bathroom Recycling
There’s a good chance you already recycle in the kitchen, but your bathroom is also filled with plastic products that too often get thrown away. Since we make many recyclable bathroom items from brands like Dove®, Suave Professionals® and Vaseline®, bathroom recycling is an issue we’re taking seriously. Partnering with Keep America Beautiful and the Ad Council, as well as Vine creators like Zach King, we helped inform Americans about recycling in the bathroom!
Protecting Our Forests with World Wildlife Fund
There are countless reasons we should care about the planet’s trees, but since deforestation spurs climate change, we knew we needed to take action. Unilever partnered with World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness about deforestation, and committed to protecting one million trees in threatened forests in Brazil and Indonesia.
Taking Climate Action in Paris
Recently, we took part in the COP21 Paris Climate talks. Our CEO Paul Polman joined other leaders in Paris and called for even stronger climate action from businesses to prevent the negative effects of climate change. While the climate agreement reached is a great start, we will continue to lead by example and take strong actions to avoid harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Eliminating Factory Waste
You might not think of it when you’re opening up your bottle of Hellmann’s® or washing your face with St. Ives®, but there’s a lot that goes into making our family of brands all over the world. Through innovative reducing and reusing of waste products, we were able to announce the end of sending non-hazardous waste to landfills at the beginning of 2015, a huge step in our goal of reducing our environmental impact.
Love Has No Labels
Equality saw great progress in the U.S. this year. It is also central to our business, from our dedication to gender equality to our work and recognition in LGBT equality. Unilever partnered with the Ad Council and other non-profits to create this powerful movement supporting diversity and inclusion, and inspiring people to put aside labels in the name of love.
Our support of gender equality goes beyond the workplace as well. This year Unilever partnered with VICE to launch Broadly, a website focusing on storytelling from a female perspective. We believe in the mission of focusing on issues that matter to millions of young women, so we will continue to support this new channel for years to come.
Behind The Family of Brands
It’s one thing to say we’re dedicated to sustainable business, but another to be recognized by a major non-profit like Oxfam. After placing near the top for many years, we became the top-rated company in Oxfam’s Behind The Brands scorecard for our strong actions on climate action and workers’ rights.
Investing In Technology For A Brighter Future
As much work as we do on our own brands, we want to champion ideas, technology and innovations that are outside of our walls. So, after success in other continents, we proudly launched the North American branch of the Unilever Foundry, our platform to connect innovative start-ups with Unilever expertise to help solve global challenges.
Helping End Extreme Poverty with Global Citizens
In support of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, we teamed up with Global Citizen for a day-long concert in NYC leading up to the Paris Climate Summit and celebrating “global citizens” who work for social change.
Bright Years To Come
With all the accomplishments of 2015, we’re still looking ahead to future commitments, like our goal of using only renewable energy by 2030.
We were reminded this year that no single person or company can succeed alone, which is why we need people like you to take small steps to help create an even brighter future.
