16,000 Young Leaders
Inspire At We Day California
Tens of thousands of young change-makers came together on February 25th for We Day California, and their collective motivation was truly awe-inspiring.
Since 2007, We Day has brought together thousands of socially motivated students who earned their way to the event through one local and one global act. At We Day California, we were honored to once again have the opportunity to support these new leaders.
No Small Actions
Rob Candelino, our VP of Marketing, Hair Care, emphasized the gravity of collective action saying, “We need each and every one of you to take action to create a brighter future.” And in the true spirit of Unilever Project Sunlight, he continued, “We will support you every step of the way.”
Brothers Craig and Marc Kielburger started We Day as an extension of their international charity, Free The Children; while on-stage, Craig passionately reinforced the organization’s mission of empowering young people, telling the audience, “Each and every one of you have something to make this world a better place.” Later in the event, Christian McGuigan from Participant Media summed up the spirit of the day, “Any action done with another in mind is huge, it echoes.”
We have been recognizing young people who go above and beyond with our Bright Future Grants, and this year’s recipient, Marissa Medici, stood out even in such a talented, passionate crowd. As the leader of her school’s environmental club, Marissa created a drought-tolerant garden, runs the school’s recycling program and has held clean-a-thons for local parks and beaches throughout Vista, Calif. Alongside Rob Candelino, she spoke to her own bright future, “With the help of Unilever and Free the Children, I know I can grow into a future leader.”
The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan helps us stay on track to work towards a brighter future, but as Rob said, “Unilever can’t do it alone.” So we’re proud to keep supporting inspiring young leaders, like Marissa, who are the leaders of tomorrow.
