New Solutions, Old Problems
With small changes, our planet and environment can see big results.
With 7 billion people in the world, the idea of having sufficient natural resources can seem somewhat unrealistic at times. Moreover, these limited natural resources must have the capacity for renewal and longer life cycles. However, through the practice of sustainable consumption, together we can solve the problem.
Sustainable consumption is the use of goods and services in a way that minimizes the negative impact on our planet. There are a few key factors required to make this happen: using eco-friendly product material, minimizing waste/pollution, and the use of renewable resources. These practices are the building blocks of sustainable consumption and the heart of our belief system. Through a business model that’s rooted in sustainable living, we at Unilever are making strides to create a better world for future generations—but we need your help, too.
You can also make a difference by supporting brands that invest in such initiatives. By transforming the way you think about your shopping habits as well as your everyday routines, joining the group effort to have a positive impact on the planet is mutually beneficial for everyone.
With the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan as the backdrop of these efforts, Unilever has both changed our own sourcing to reduce our carbon footprint and utilize recycled materials, and we hope our customers will do the same. We also encourage the repurposing of our products to serve a green function. For example, turning Hellmann’s ® jars into herb planters, or taking that empty shampoo bottle and creating a caddy.
Similarly, the sticks and packaging for Q-tips®, for example, are sourced from sustainable forests, carefully tested and completely biodegradable. Lipton®, which is sold across the globe, sustainably sources its teas through a partnership with the Rainforest Alliance—an organization that helps farmers improve their crop yields while also reducing environmental impacts and waste in the process. By 2015, Lipton® is committed to using 100% world-wide sustainable teas in its tea bags.
Small, everyday actions toward living sustainably make a big difference in the world, and Unilever brightFuture encourages everyone to do exactly that. For more information on sustainability and how you can consume more sustainably, see our Unilever Sustainable Living Plan.
