#ShareAMeal Donates Millions
To Help The Hungry
With your help, we demonstrated the power of social media to do good.
Hunger can’t be solved overnight or tackled by a single person or group. With one in six children in America facing hunger, we’ve partnered with Feeding America to help end child hunger. We saw an outpouring of support for these 16 million hungry children, and people were motivated more than ever to make a difference and to spread the message of #ShareAMeal.
Social Media, Social Mission
Share A Meal saw great success in its first year, so this year we wanted to do even more. We encouraged people to help spread the word on Twitter and Instagram with “empty plate selfies.”
For every like, comment, retweet, or photo of an empty plate that helped spread the message, Unilever donated one meal to Feeding America.** People all over America took up the cause - we saw thousands of empty plate selfies - and we were able to reach our goal in less than 48 hours.
Additionally, our Share A Meal ambassador Ciara helped use her voice for good by reaching millions on social media and TV. We discussed the importance of sharing a meal with the new mom and Grammy Award-winning singer while she helped prep meals for the New York City food bank, City Harvest:
“Being a mom, [child hunger] speaks to my heart deeply…Especially during this Thanksgiving season of giving, I really feel for the families and kids that don’t have food on their table.”
Another part of our success came from Instagram foodies and photographers who participated in a “blackout” of food photos on Instagram. They helped illustrate what a meal may look like to a child facing hunger with bare plates instead of bountiful meals.
Help Us Continue Our Efforts
Even though Share A Meal is coming to an end, we believe there is no limit to how you give back. Both online and in your own community, there is always a way to Share A Meal and make a difference all year round.
