Are you watching
your waste line?
Food waste can be a struggle for many American families as we all become more conscientious of healthy eating while saving money.
Cutting down on waste can be tricky, but there are three areas where simple switches can make a huge difference… Shop more sensibly. Store food better. Love your leftovers.
To shop more sensibly, keep an eye on sell-by dates. If you don’t think you’ll eat something before its time is up, try freezing it to make it last longer. And next time you’re at the grocery store, don’t overdo it. Avoid buying too much food by planning your meals in advance and keeping track of portion sizes.
For better storage, put each food item in its place. Apples go in the fridge, potatoes in a cool dark place, and bread in the cupboard or freezer. You can also save space in your freezer by using freezer bags instead of rigid plastic tubs. They defrost perfectly well and the bags, too, can be washed and re-used.
Lastly, learn to love your leftovers. No one wants to eat the same thing over and over, which is why we need to get creative. It’s possible to transform your leftovers into a delicious new meal; cut down on waste; and save money. For a leftover makeover, check out:
