Two ladies picking tea in the fields

1 small cup

makes a big difference

With millions of families depending on the tea industry for their futures, it’s vital we continue to support the world’s tea farmers. Learn how a small cup can make a big difference.

Tea is the second most popular drink in the world, and every tea-loving culture has its own story to tell of the origins of the flavorful leaf. With a five thousand year heritage and its soothing, restorative properties, it’s no surprise that today 70,000 cups of tea are enjoyed every second.

Tea has become a staple, not just of daily routines and social gatherings, but of the livelihoods of 50 million people around the world. Over the years, production methods have changed considerably but now soil condition, overuse of fertilizer and poor agricultural practices pose a threat to the livelihoods of millions.

Lipton and organizations, such as the Rainforest Alliance, are working with smallholders to help develop more sustainable approaches to tea farming. With two million people involved in growing and processing Lipton tea, the spread of new techniques and resources will help build positive futures for our farmers and their families.

Ladies picking tea in the fields

Turkey, the world’s fifth largest tea producer, is set to benefit from Lipton’s program, along with many women working long days farming tea. “If there’s no tea,” one woman tea picker tells us, “there’s no living.” Tea production is crucial to families in the Black Sea region, but insufficient healthcare can lead to severe difficulties and painful work. As well as 2,000 training sessions on farming techniques, Lipton’s program will also see 5,000 women growers benefiting from health services that target back pain, spine and joint pain.

In conjunction with the Rainforest Alliance, the program will help 15,000 Turkish tea growers receive one-to-one training in sustainable agricultural practices to help them become Rainforest Alliance Certified. With training initiatives like this, we can ensure all Lipton’s Turkish tea products come from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms by 2018.
